DON'T BE SHY!
The Magic Bullet Fund March/April 2007
SophieSOPHIE
Sophie is a blue coat, blue nose pit bull, which is very rare. We got her when she was 2 days old and weighing just barely 4 oz and we bottle raised her. She is a precious member of our family and she loves to sing to us.

My husband, daughter and I were all devastated when we found out 2 weeks ago that Sophie has cancer.  We really couldn't believe it because she was only 1 year, 7 months and 22 days old! Age is obviously not a factor. Sophie was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma in the right front scapula. We took her to a surgeon, Dr. Dew, and he suggested that we allow him to amputate from the scapula down. Of course, this had to be performed in order to save her life.

This was not a hard decision to make, just hard to have to believe. The day we found out about the cancer, my wonderful sister (Sophie's wonderful Aunt) Holly researched on the web.  She came upon the awesome Magic Bullet Fund website as well as a wealth of other information about canine cancer. We were amazed about the fund and immediately started submitting our information about Sophie and her diagnosis. We prayed that God would lead us in the right path with everything concerning this journey we were about to take. And we were accepted by the fund!! We felt overwhelmed and very, very thankful!

LacyLACY
Our dog Lacy a beautiful girl. She is our 9 1/2 year old yellow lab and she is currently being treated for cancer. She has just undergone successful surgery to remove a tumor in her left rear leg around the hock area.

The most wonderful thing about Lacy is her sensitivity. She is attuned to everything and everyone, it doesn't matter who it is. This is true also of other animals. If there is something wrong or if some one is feeling under the weather, Lacy knows it. It's as if she feels it too! On the other hand, when something great is going on, Lacy is right in there enjoying life right along with you. She is a soul mate to the world.

You can imagine how devastated we were when we learned that the slight limp that she developed was not arthritis, but a cancerous tumor growing in her leg. I just wanted to do something to take this burdon and awful thing away from her. Being that Lacy is so sensitive to everything and having read that some dogs can actually smell out cancer in humans I worried that Lacy new she had cancer. I even asked myself the question did she know and she was unable to tell us. That thought broke my heart. When I told my two sons her diagnosis they immediately said, "Mom we have to do something."

Something, YES! But what? We are struggling to make ends meet after my husband was laid off for more then 9 months. He worked with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Ironic that this big drug company also manufacturers many of the drugs used to treat animals. He has recently returned to work but the time off has put us in financial ruins and his new job pays less then half of what his old position paid. Michigan is a state that is currently in a very bad depression.

We started circling the wagons and in my search for answers, I accidentally came across the site that Laurie Kaplan had started the Magic Bullet Fund- or maybe not accidentally. I like to think of it as divine intervention! I had already placed a few emails to some other sites and did not get any reply so that is why when I received a response from Laurie, I think within 24 hours, I was in awe! All I can say is that there really are wonderful people out there. The people that support this site -  we thank you all for what you do to help us keep our friends, our companions, the  furry members of our families, our dogs who we love so much - to stay with us for as long as it is God's will.

Our home would be a very lonely place without Lacy!

Rookie ROOKIE
Rookie enjoys the simple pleasures in life: the sun on his face, cuddling under the covers when it's cold and having his chest scratched. Without a doubt, when the weather is beautiful, you can always find Rookie outside on the lawn chair, sunning himself.

One day, while scratching Rookie’s chest, I felt that all of his lymph nodes were swollen. It happened overnight. There were no other signs that anything was wrong up until this point. I immediately took Rookie to the vet for tests, and a few days later he was diagnosed with lymphoma. I consulted a veterinary oncologist and we began chemotherapy, even though I hadn't yet figured out how I would pay for the treatment. That didn’t matter, I would find a way.

After starting Rookie’s treatment, I set about finding a way to cover the whole series of 19 weeks of chemo treatments.  Purely by accident, I stumbled upon the Magic Bullet Fund web site. I read the home page and realized that we might be able to get assistance from the Magic Bullet Fund. I told myself not to get my hopes up, but I was very excited and hopeful. Within hours, Laurie Kaplan responded to my plea, saying that the fund would provide financial assistance for Rookie’s cancer treatment. The sense of relief was overwhelming. The Magic Bullet Fund has restored my faith in humanity.

Sometimes the breaks in life come our way and sometimes they don’t. Thanks to the Magic Bullet Fund, Rookie got his break!

RILEY
This precious 10-year-old girl was taken in by Kirstie and Glenn Dean as a foster dog. Surprise, surprise - she stole their hearts and found her forever home right there with them and Gizmo and Scout, both Shelties.

Riley has lymphoma. She
completed a chemo protocol for lymphoma in Georgia in November 2006 , but came out of remission a week later. At that time, Riley's family moved to NJ for Glenn's new military asgnment, and the Deans' finances were depleted. Kirstie asked the fund to help Riley try for a second remission with another chemo protocol.

Riley is in chemotherapy at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Trinton Falls, NJ and she is in remission.
