Buster was born in my
suburban back yard from my thoroughbred Rottweiller, Nikita (registered
as Majestic Venus Heaven's Love with the AKC) and our Mixed Breed Dog,
Harry. He was so small he would curl up in the palm of my hand and go
to sleep.
The entire litter, being Nikita's first, unfortunately was affected by
a
herpes virus. As a result, we spent a week and a half and 20 towels
feeding the puppies via a stomach tube. All of the puppies died over
the period of
that week, INCLUDING Buster. We were able to resuscitate
Buster and Midnight. Midnight was weaned and given to another family
where he is living it up in Eastern Henrico County.
In 2004, we moved to the country. Cumberland County is a vast expanse
of farms and hunting reserves. Buster took some time to get used to
roaming about our 5-acre plot, and now has expanded his roaming to the
15000+ acres that surround our property, uninterrupted by any roads. He
goes after the occasional rabbit and groundhog, and lives a
wonderful life.
* Note from MBF: Now
that Buster is senior and has cancer, his free-roaming has been
curtailed so that Rick can keep a closer eye on him.
Buster is the alpha of a pack of dogs, consisting of my Australian
Shepherd
(Rocky), Golden Retriever, a Chihuahua, and a Pit Bull. They are all
best friends and they all occasionally come to the front porch and eat
from Buster's feeders, which he is happy to share with them.
He also gets along perfectly with my cat, Socks, and my parrot, George.
This dog is one of the finest souls I know, be it four legs or two. All
your support is very appreciated and I have a lot of faith that the
upcoming surgery will give him a chance to beat cancer.
Thank you!
Rick Nickell - AKA Buster's Dad.
