KOBI
By
Lisa and Michael Lopes
Our
Kobi is a gentle giant, a big fluffy love bug,
protector of the innocent, and a social butterfly. When
wrestling with his brother Max, Kobi puts his head down like
a bull and charges. He uses his big, soft head to open
doors, nudge people, and to show affection. Kobi is
the prince of our household and reigns with much grace and
dignity.
Kobi
recently turned 11 years old, while fighting the battle of
his life. In June, 2007 he was diagnosed with lymphoma.
Kobi's doctor, Randal Wirth, DVM, at the Newport Animal
Hospital in Middletown, RI, administered a chemo protocol
and Kobi WAS IN remission for 6 months. Next, Kobi was given
the CCNU (lomustine) rescue protocol but he has come out of
remission again.
We want to
give Kobi another chance. We cannot give up just yet. The
MOPP protocol will
give us another chance to
earn lots more time with our boy.
This past year has been physically,
emotionally, and financially draining, but having our happy,
healthy Kobi with us is a true blessing that is beyond
words.
From the initial tests in May
2007, to the final chemo treatment at the end of October,
our total vet bills for Kobi were about $5,000, plus the cost of chemo drugs,
which we purchased at a local
pharmacy, and his supplements and special food. Despite receiving financial assistance from generous
family members and some very dear friends, we came to the
realization that we still needed help.
In
September 2007, I found The Magic Bullet Fund while reading
Laurie Kaplan’s book, “Help Your Dog Fight Cancer.” We
applied, and the fund agreed to help us. We are blown away by the kindness
and generosity of our family, friends, and people who have
never even met us who donate for Kobi through The Magic
Bullet Fund.
I feel
so passionately about the work that The Magic Bullet Fund
does, that I have become
a volunteer. It’s very rewarding to know that my
contributions will help many wonderful dogs and their
people, during a most difficult time in their lives.
Learning that our beloved and devoted companion has lymphoma
was one of the worst experiences of our lives. Becoming part
of The Magic Bullet Fund family was one of the best.
Please contribute
toward Kobi's treatment, he is not ready to give up, and
neither are we!
