Supplements benefit any dog and are essential for dogs with cancer

Omega-3 fatty acids have cardiac, psychological and occular benefits. They promote joint, coat and skin health. They provide anti-inflammatory benefits that are especially important for dogs with cancer and may prevent the weight loss that can be problematic for dogs in chemotherapy. Omega 3 fatty acids are found in fish oil, with EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (doxosahexaenoic acid) . The ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) found in flaxseed, canola and soy oil enable the body to manufacture EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA are polyunsaturated "good fats." The O-3 product you choose should be low in dl-PCBs (less than 3 picograms per day). If you use O-3 fatty acid products in liquid form, protect them from becoming rancid by refrigerating and using the entire supply within a few weeks after you open the bottle. Do not over-use. In cancer treatment, immunosuppression is a factor. If your dog's stools become oily, the oils are not being absorbed. Try a different product or give less.

Antioxidants line the shelves of every health food store. On a cellular level, antioxidants neutralize the free radical cells that promote cancer. There are many different antioxidants, such as pycnogenol, cordyceps, astaxanthin, alpha-lipoic acid and IP-6 to name only a few.

L-Glutamine is an essential amino acid. Among many other benefits, L-Glutamine protects the small intestine from damage caused by chemotherapy drugs. To minimize gastro-intestinal side effects of chemo, all dogs in the Magic Bullet Fund who are in chemotherapy are given L-Glutamine. Any dog with gastro-intestinal ailments will benefit from this supplement.

L-Arginine has been found to hinder the progression of cancer. L-Arginine is included in many dog foods, don't over-supplement.

Probiotics help to improve immune function and to prevent or resolve diahrrea. Probiotics contain acidophilus and bifidus lactobacilus and other "good" bacteria that exist naturally in the stomach.

Milk Thistle offers protection for the liver and may prevent liver toxicity as a result of chemotherapy. In the case of liver dysfunction, speak to your veterinarian before giving your dog milk thistle, as stimulation of the liver may be contraindicated or may interact negatively with liver medications that have been prescribed.

Give your dog high quality supplements that are produced with reliable quality control.

The reports from www.ConsumerLab.com can help you choose the best quality supplements for your dog... and for the rest of your family!

Thousands of manufacturers and distributors claim their products fight cancer. There are just as many web sites selling these products. Most have only anecdotal evidence of their efficacy with testimonials from users, veterinarians and/or physicians attesting to the supplement's cancer-fighting properties.

Which products actually help in the fight against cancer?
Clearly, there is no supplement that cures cancer! If there was, none of our pets or family would have cancer. Successful cases do occur, and may be due to a lucky selection of treatment + diet + supplement regimen. Or they may be spontaneous cures or remissions that do occur sporadically and inexplicably, just as cancer itself may inexplicably develop in some dogs and not others.

Each cancer case is different and each dog with cancer is unique.
A supplement that is helpful in one case may be ineffective in others for reasons that are not yet understood. With the information currently available, we must each pick and choose what we believe will help our dog. Supplements can help - after all, pharmaceuticals developed are produced from herbs and other natural substances. The ingredients aren't pulled out of the air or imported from Jupiter! What we don't know about most of the supplements due to lack of testing, is which ones work, how well and in what dosages.

Ask members of a support group, ask your holistic vet, ask any member of your dog's medical team, for information about supplements that can help your dog. When you find a supplement that you want to give your dog, type it into a search engine and compare sources. Most supplements are available through various companies or distributors. The prices vary widely and the quality may vary as well. Some products are organic or natural-made and others are not. Some manufacturers have superior quality control of their products.
