Dear Magic Bullet Fund
I write to you on behalf of my dog Emma. Three days ago, on Christmas Eve, she was diagnosed with lymphoma. My only assets are a rusting green car and two dogs I brought back from Africa while in the Peace Corps. Currently I am a third year medical student living solely off of student loans. Emma's treatments so far have amounted to over $1100 in just one week's time. I am nearly $200,000 in debt with school loans. Any assistance you can provide would be of great help.

Sincerely, Jara
, Utica NY

Other than a little loss of appetite for dog food (still quite voracious for human food), she handled the doxorubicin really well. Overall she is in good spirits. She is scheduled to receive vincristine on February 4th. I will not require your assistance for this treatment. Thank you.

Emma is doing really well. She had vincristine last weekend and so far has not had the delayed side effects that she did the last time she had the drug.

Emma is doing wonderful.. .even without whiskers [lost due to chemotherapy]. She's eating well and is in good spirits. She's on a three week chemo cycle now. Her last treatment was vincristine and next will be cyclophosphamide, followed by doxorubicin. She was weaned off prednisone a couple of weeks ago, which she had been on since her diagnosis in December. Med school rotations are coming along fine. I've decided to pursue a career in pediatrics and am currently in the process of setting up my rotations for next year.
Thank you, Jara

Emma is doing fabulous! Unfortunately, because of my traveling rotations in medical school, she is not currently residing with me and I miss her terribly. But my mother reports she is as much of a piggy as ever...waking mom up in the very early morning hours and leading her to the snack cabinet!

Hi Laurie,
Emma is doing great...her usual piggy self!
Happy Holidays to everyone

On Christmas Eve we saw the one-year anniversary since Emma was diagnosed with lymphoma. She seems happy to have enjoyed another holiday season, eating (as always) as much as possible. Her last round of chemo was 5 months ago. Her whiskers have returned. She continues on with her regular activities of staring us out of bed in the morning, bringing us to the snack cabinet, and acting as if she really needs to go outside to lure her brother to the door and away from a coveted item. She is ever crafty. And ever amusing.

Hope all is well. Happy new year to all,
Jara and Emma

Emma is doing so well. In fact, her brother Petri was under the weather and not eating too well the other day. Emma capitalized on the opportunity to eat his bowl of food as well as her own. Then, when another was placed out for him and I stepped out of the room for a short minute, Emma polished off her third bowl of food for the morning. She looked really guilty...but she just couldn't help herself I guess.

I just found out where I'll be going for my pediatric residency- Rochester, NY. It's nice to finally know where I'll be for the next three years! I'm just finishing up my fourth year of med school... I'll graduate in June!

Take care all, Jara, Emma and Petri

Hi Laurie,
Hope all is well. I'm just writing to update. I've recently graduated from medical school and started a residency in pediatrics. Because of this, I will no longer be in need of Magic Bullet assistance.

Emma is doing well, spunky and clever as ever. She finished her chemo nearly a year ago and we're hoping for the best. I'll keep you posted.

Have a good holiday and summer,
Jara, Emma, & Petri
